Why Google reviews disappear (real causes, not just fake reviews)

It isn't always a fake review — sometimes it's Google

When a genuine positive review suddenly vanishes, it's easy to assume the customer deleted it. But Google also removes reviews on its own when its automated system flags something suspicious, even if the review is completely real.

This is different from fake reviews others try to slip past you — here we're talking about genuine reviews from real customers that Google decides to hide or remove under its own internal policy.

The most common causes

The author deleted their Google account, deactivated it, or switched profiles — their review disappears along with the account, with nothing to do with you.

Google's automated system flagged the review as spam or risky content (sometimes over specific words, links, or patterns that match fake-review behavior, even when it isn't one) — false positives happen and aren't rare.

A recent activity spike on your listing (many new reviews in a short time, even genuine ones) can trigger an automated review that temporarily hides reviews while Google checks the pattern.

Internal Google policy changes that retroactively re-review older reviews — this happens in waves and has nothing to do with your specific business.

What to do when it happens

First, confirm it actually disappeared and it isn't a caching issue — reload the listing in an incognito browser or on your phone.

If it still isn't showing, wait a few days: many cases are temporary automated reviews that resolve on their own. If after a week or two it's still gone and you believe it was a mistake, you can report it through Google Business Profile explaining it's a legitimate review removed in error.

Document screenshots of the original review (date, text, author) before reporting — it helps Google support understand the context.

How to lower the risk on your listing

Avoid artificial spikes: asking for reviews consistently (rather than in occasional mass pushes) lowers the odds Google flags your listing for automated review.

Keep your listing verified and up to date — listings with more signals of being a real, active business get more leeway from Google's automated filters than neglected ones.
