How to remove or report a Google review (step-by-step guide)

Which reviews Google can remove (and which it can't)

Google removes reviews that break its policies: spam and fake content, reviews from people who were never customers, offensive or illegal language, advertising and conflicts of interest (for example from competitors or employees).

A legitimate negative review, even one you think is unfair or harsh, won't be removed: what works is replying calmly.

How to report a review, step by step

1. Open your Google Business Profile and go to the reviews section (or find your business on Google Maps).

2. Find the review, click the three dots and choose Report review.

3. Pick the reason that fits best (spam, fake content, offensive language, conflict of interest...).

4. Keep a screenshot and the date in case you need to appeal. Google will email you the result; it doesn't set an exact deadline but usually reviews reports within a few days.

If Google rejects your report

You can appeal once through Google Business Profile support, adding context: why the person isn't a real customer, which claim is false or which policy it breaks. Meanwhile, reply professionally: people reading your listing judge how you react.

The legal route: when it makes sense

If the review contains false statements that harm your business, or insults, you can consider a legal removal request to Google or talk to a lawyer. An opinion, even a harsh one, is usually protected; a false accusation of fact isn't always. This is general information, not legal advice.

How to delete your own Google review

If you're a customer who wants to delete a review you wrote: open Google Maps, go to your profile, open Reviews or Contributions, tap the three dots on the review and choose Delete. You can also edit it instead of deleting it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Google take to remove a reported review?

Google doesn't publish an exact deadline. It usually reviews reports within a few days and emails you the outcome.

Can I remove a negative review just because it's unfair?

No. Only reviews that break Google's policies are removed. If it's legitimate, even if harsh, the right move is to reply.

Can I ask the customer to delete their review?

You can contact them politely to solve the problem, but don't offer anything in exchange for changing or deleting it: Google's policies don't allow it.
